Café Sci @ HanaHaus: Using the Immune System to Treat Cancer - Dr. Ron Levy
Café Sci @ HanaHaus: Using the immune system to treat cancer - Dr. Ron Levy
Dr. Levy explains why there is so much excitement about recent discoveries that are changing the way we think about and treat cancer. Last year the Nobel prize in medicine was awarded to two scientists, one from Texas and one from Japan for their work on unlocking the immune system to fight cancer. These new therapies have already changed the paradigm of cancer treatment for many people and are a foot in the door for future improvements.
Speaker: Dr. Ronald Levy - professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ronald Levy specializes in lymphoma, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Burkitt’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease. His work has led to the concept that antibodies can be used as personalized anticancer drugs and to the development of an antibody-based drug, Rituxan, that is widely used to treat lymphoma. His work has been recognized with multiple honors and awards, including the King Faisal International Prize in 2009.
