How to Use Contrast Words (but, however, nevertheless, although, despite, …)

Do you wonder what the difference is between ‘however’ and ‘nevertheless’? These synonyms have the same function and meaning and both are formal academic words, though there is a subtle difference when it comes to usage and context.

The same applies to ‘but’ and ‘yet’, ‘although’ and ‘even though’, and other contrast words. We also look at the use of ‘but’ + ‘nevertheless’ and ‘however’ + ‘despite’ within one sentence or clause.
In this video we look at all these words in terms of their grammatical use as well as their stylistic use. There are plenty of sample sentences to help make the distinctions clear.
This lesson is a little advanced and may be a bit confusing, but hopefully useful.
