Date spider mite (Oligonychus afrasiaticus) is a non-insect pest.
This mite is one of the most dangerous pests that affect palms, especially in dry areas.
Immediately after fruit set (Hababouk stage), mite eggs are deposited to produce larvae which will feed on the fruits and later cover these with a web retaining sand particles. Mites will rapidly multiply causing the drop-off of the fruits. Affected mature fruits are of no commercial value.
Prevention of the infestation is essential, and the practice of good cultural techniques will protect the date plantation from infestation by date spider mite : Regular surveys, under a severe attack, affected bunches are to be removed and burnt, weed management, annual pruning of dried leaves and old bunches, date palms are not to be stressed and appropriate irrigation and fertilisation programmes are to be respected and dusting date palms in winter with sulphur.
Spraying with a specialized acaricide at the early stages of the infection to get the best results, while making sure to change the active ingredient, as the date spider mite is one of the pests that generates rapid resistance to pesticides. The control of the pest may need to spray pesticides more than once during the season to get the best results.
Micronized sulfur is effective.
