Indian Mugger Crocodile - Crocodylus Palustris

The Mugger Crocodile or Indian Marsh Crocodile (Crocodylus Palustris) is said to be still common in rivers in South India, as for example in the Kaveri (Cauvery). But of course, most of them may live meanwhile in captivity, e.g. in the Madras Crocodile Bank in Mamallapuram, where they have more than 2.000 of this species.

These guys here are still enjoying kind of free life, swimming in pure Kaveri water in Ranganathittu next to our boat. Means, they are not in captivity, but obviously they like to stay there in the bird sanctuary, even if they could easily escape through the river - seems they like to stay where is plenty of food for them ... ;-)
