Derek Chauvin Trial: Hennepin County ME Andrew Baker to testify

Prosecutors are expected to open Friday afternoon's court proceedings with Hennepin County Medical Examiner Andrew Baker taking the stand. Baker performed the official autopsy on George Floyd, and determined his cause of death.

Baker testified that he made a conscious decision to not view the viral videos of George Floyd's detention and subsequent death, as he did not want to bias the upcoming autopsy.

Earlier forensic pathologist and former medical examiner Dr. Lindsey Thomas testified that George Floyd did not die of an overdose or heart disease, but from "law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression" that caused him to lose oxygen, stopping his heart and lungs (cardiopulmonary arrest).

Floyd would not have died "except for the interactions with law enforcement," she told the court.

During cross-examination defense attorney Eric Nelson questioned Thomas about Floyd's diseased heart, and about her position that his prone position during his arrest contributed to his death.

Hennepin County Medical Examiner Andrew Baker is also expected to testify Friday.

On Thursday pulmonologist and breathing expert Dr. Martin Tobin shared his opinion that George Floyd died from low oxygen caused by shallow breathing. Tobin testified that lack of oxygen resulted in damage to Floyd's brain, and caused his heart to stop. Tobin said he believes Floyd's shallow breathing was caused by prone position, handcuffs behind his back, and knees on the neck and back.

Chauvin faces three charges, second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in May 2020.
