A Lions Last Day

This is one of those stories that could have you in tears. The sad, but natural end to the life of a lioness and these were some of her last moments, shared with a clan of 50 hyena whilst feeding on an elephant carcass.

Don Heyneke encountered this incredible sighting, watching an old, frail lioness feed alongside a clan of hyena. The hyena seemed to understand that the lion was living out her last days and happily allowed her to join them.

A few days later, Don was walking in the bush close to where this sighting had taken place and came across the skeleton of a lioness. It was assumed to be the same female, now returned to the death, to play her role in the circle of life.
