1/12 scale (accurate) Boeing 747 - 400. Span 5.2m, length 5.62m.
Has 4 real miniature turbojet engines. Designed, built and presented by Andy Herzfeld at WAMASC, Whiteman Park, Western Australia November 2017.
Taxi run only as flight certification for public events was still pending when this video was taken. Sorry about the video quality, it's only an old cheap hand-held camera and is not "pro" in any way. I'm surprised how popular it's been so to say thanks I'm working on new content. Thanks for your support, subscribe to keep it going with more videos of the spectacular RC and model Jet community.

People have asked, is this bigger than Adi Pitz's 747-400? Yes, slightly, Adi's Virigin 747-400 has a span of 4.95m, this one is 5.21m, with a similar increase in length, making this the new world's biggest RC 747 since 2017. Andy is an engineer for QANTAS at Perth airport and developed his own plans from technical documents for the Boeing 747-400. So it is from a completely original and different source to Adi Pitz's.

Thanks also to Adi Pitz for sharing his fantastic RC 747, that was built a couple of years before this one and is a beautiful, awesome model with many fans, and it deserves them. It was the world's largest RC 747 for some years until this one was built and is still one of the world's best giant scale RC models. There are several larger RC planes, but this is now the largest RC 747. This is the -400 model at 1/12 scale (I believe Adi's is 1/13). Many people wonder where you get these; they are not on sale. Both Andy and Adi designed and built their models themselves, with their years of experience and specialist knowledge.

So, does this one really fly? Yes it does, but it was not legally able to at this event. That's why it was only allowed to make a run on the ground. That is the real sound of the miniature jet engines. This was a public open day at the WAMASC RC club, and to fly at events in front of the public, models over 25kg in Australia must receive certification from CASA. It's basically a small aircraft, not a toy, so safety is critical. This model had only completed 2 of the certification test flights at the time, plus Andy's own maiden and test flights. So, yes, it really does fly, but no, not in this video, for legal reasons. I'll arrange a flight video soon as possible. And why doesn't Andy post his own video? Because he's not doing it for publicity, just achievement, which I totally support. Andy built the model for other reasons, such as involving the club and his son. He very kindly gave me permission to post this video, as I think the model's awesome and I hope others will too. I know everyone wants to see it fly, but I haven't got that on video yet. When I do, I'll post it. Promise!

FAQ - can I buy one of these? No, Andy built this one himself, this is the only one. Same for Adi Pitz, both hand built from their own designs.
How much does it cost? - Andy hasn't said but the jet engines can cost a few thousand dollars each, and there are a lot of other components inside, some have to be hand-made. It would usually cost over $20,000 to build a jet model this size and quality. If you want to learn about RC start with a site like rcgroups.com
How is it made? - the largest parts are made from blocks of foam, cut with a hot wire. There is a strong "chassis" to support these. The wings are also cut from foam, with a strong supporting spar. Almost like a surf board. Wing spars may use wood, carbon fibre etc. They are usually covered with balsa wood and/or fibreglass for strength at this scale. Traditionally model wings use balsa rib and spar construction, foam is becoming common now. Look for RC hobby stores, they sell kits with the same techniques. But this was NOT a kit! This was custom designed and built, by Andy, cos he's such a legend :)
