Euphoria vs. 13 Reasons Why: The Romanticization of Mental Anguish

(SPOILERS FOR EUPHORIA S1, 13 REASONS WHY S1, & TRAINSPOTTING [1996])

This video was inspired by a chat I had with a friend in my Discord, discussing portrayals of mental illness in media which led to me sharing a personal experience which I’ll discuss later. In this video I will discuss media’s romanticization of mental anguish or turmoil which I will use as umbrella terms to cover such things as anxiety, depression, drug abuse, self-harm, and suicide. To do so, I will be contrasting Netflix's 13 Reasons Why and HBO’s Euphoria, particularly their portrayals of the mental anguish of each show’s female lead, Hannah Baker and Rue Bennet respectively.
