Dogs 101 - BELGIAN MALINOIS - Top Dog Facts About the BELGIAN MALINOIS

The Belgian Malinois is a medium-to-large breed of dog, one of the four in the Belgian Sheepdog group. In its native land, it has a long history of being bred as a sheep-herding and guard dog. Being a working animal meant for the farm, it was never bred for its appearance, resulting in the absence of careful records. In the late 19th century, a veterinary professor gathered establishing stock from different parts of Belgium, and developed multiple strains of medium to large sized dogs. Each strain was named after the place of origin, with the Malinois being from the area around the city of Malines. It is the most popular of the four Belgian Sheepdogs in Belgium, but has been a slow-starter for most of the 20th century in the US. Only in recent times has it begun to gain popularity as a dog used by the police and military.

The adult Malinois has a height between 22 to 26 inches, with the female being slightly shorter than the male. The weight tends to be in the range of 60 to 65 pounds. It is often confused with the more popular German Shepherd, but is more elegant in build and lighter-boned. Viewed from the side, the topline, the forelegs and the hind legs approximate a square. A clean-cut head, black tapering muzzle, black erect ears and brown almond-shaped eyes are other characteristic features. A short, straight, somewhat hard upper coat covers a dense undercoat. A pure-bredMalinois would have coat color in the range of fawn to mahogany and tan, with a black mask.

Grooming:The Malinois is a regular shedder, with the mass of shedding increasing twice a year. Brushing two to three times a week, and more frequently with a slicker brush in shedding season will remove the dead hair. Brushing of teeth, trimming of nails and cleaning of ears has to be regular.

Temperament:TheMalinois is typically an alert, hard working, protective and intelligent dog. ‘Serious’ is an adjective often employed for the dog – it can be friendly, but not likely to be seen doing goofy stuff, especially once it has reached adulthood. It gets along well with its own family, but is aloof with strangers and aggressive with other animals. This makes it an excellent watchdog and guard dog.

Training:Dogs of this breed are known for their very high energy. They need substantial exercise and being enclosed in a small house with just a short walk outside is likely to make them neurotic or destructive. A fenced-in space to run around or a good jog is needed to keep them happy. Its high trainability is driven by a high need for rewards. Some dogs can be domineering, and early obedience training is necessary for the breed.

Health:Life expectancy for the breed is 10 to 12 years. Most health issues in the breed have been minimized through selective breeding, but some known concerns are cataracts, epilepsy, thyroid disease, skin allergies, progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia.
