Georgian Language Lesson 1 "Hello" - Robin Carlisle Recommends Peace Corps Training
Gamarjoba, my friends! As most of you know, I had the honor and pleasure of teaching English Grades 3-12 in the Republic of Georgia in 2010. After training in T'blisi and Kutaisi, I was assigned to teach at School #3 in Sachkhere, which I now consider my heart's second home.
Many of my Georgian language teachers had also taught Peace Corps Volunteers there. So, when I saw these videos among those licensed by Creative Commons here on YouTube, I decided to nab them (lawfully, of course) and share them with my fellow world travelers and ESL teachers who may have the same good fortune I did when I decided to go on my teaching adventure there.
Georgian is one of the easiest languages to learn (on one level) as it is completely phonetic, with few letters, equivalent vowels to English, similar consonants, with a few twists thrown in to make your mouth, throat, and tongue sizzle and pop, lol.
You can easily learn their alphabet, pronunciations, and find many basic terms similar to English that will help get you started. With two weeks of full time study, you could easily get around, read signs, menus, brochures, handle your money, and have enough travel and courtesy phrases to help you enjoy their culture on a much richer level.
But after that, everything's fair game... so I give you fair warning. As simple as the beginning may appear, things can sometimes get crazy complicated after that, lol.
The thing that makes it sooooo desirable to learn, however, is the hospitable people that speak this wonderful language that was reportedly created four centuries before the birth Christ. Yeah, it's a VERY OLD language... one of the originals, they claim.
But if you've never been to a Georgian Supra, you're in for a unique treat not found anywhere else in the world. And if you can just speak a little bit of Georgian, you'll enjoy this gift of hospitality even the better for it.
Enjoy!
