Flying a Small Aircraft Down to Minimums After Encountering Icing
I was flying with a student on a real-world instrument cross country. During our return home, we encountered icing - I took the controls. We went from zero icing to ice build up in about 60 seconds. I asked for a immediate descent to 8,000 but ATC denied the request because it was below their MVA. I executed an immediate 180 degree turn and started a descent to 8,200. I knew we were still inside the 25 nm MSA ring and the MSA was 8,200. Passing through 8,500, the icing was gone in about 60 seconds. I asked my student if he cared if I flew this approach. We both laughed and knew the right answer. We landed safely and spent the night in this small, friendly town.
