Making Rock Candy at Home!

Did you know you can grow your own crystals from sugar? You can!! It's called rock candy and it's one of my favourite snacks :) These sugar crystals look awesome and taste amazing!

In this video, you'll learn how the crystals form (hint, it has to do with something called a "super saturated solution"!) :) You can then try to make some at home, but only an adult should do the parts using the stove and the hot sugar solution.

These are the ingredients and the steps to try this at home...

Ingredients:
- 6 cups of sugar
- 2 cups of water
- food colouring
- 4 glass jars
- 4 wooden sticks, or lollipop sticks
- pegs
- plastic wrap

Method:
- Add some water to a jar until it's 5 cm from the top. Then add the wooden sticks to the jar, and leave them to soak for one minute.
- After a minute, take the wooden sticks out of the jar and roll them in some sugar. Put them somewhere to dry.
- Next, add 6 cups of sugar, and 2 cups of water to a saucepan.
- Heat the saucepan on the stove on medium heat, until all of the sugar has dissolved (the solution will turn clear). If it starts to boil, turn the heat down to low.
- Once all of the sugar has dissolved, turn off the heat and let the solution cool for 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, add 20 drops of food colouring to each of the four jars.
- After waiting for 30 minutes, SLOWLY pour the sugar solution into each jar, until it's 2.5 cm from the top (it's very important that you pour it slowly, so that the glass jar doesn't crack).
- Place a sugar coated stick in each jar, and hold it 2.5 cm above the bottom of the jar using a couple of pegs. Try to place it in the middle of the jar.
- Cover each jar with a piece of plastic wrap and place them in a cupboard. Leave them there for one week.
- After a week there should be a heap of crystals on the sticks in the jars!
- Take the sticks out of the jars and place them somewhere to dry (you may need to use a butter knife to break through a layer of crystals on the top of the liquid).

Enjoy eating your rock candy!
