A Divine Departure: A Journey of A Moslem Transman | Amar Alfikar | TEDxJakartaWomen
Amar grew up with a constant restlessness, where he always knew that he is not what people expected him to be. Through his religious journey, he can find and understand himself and have the courage to be who he is today. He realizes that his privilege and responsibility as an Indonesian Muslim could be embraced in personal, social, and spiritual capacities. With the belief that people are not entitled to others, he is on a voyage to encourage ourselves to be kind and respectful towards another, as well as spread more love than hate.
As a moslem activist, Amar Alfikar has advocated progresive interfaith studies on gender diversity and sexuality. This former english teacher was also a member of the steering comittee on Transgender Network Indonesia (JTID) and Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR). He also actively writes to build bridges between religion, gender, and sexuality.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
