Rethinking How We Read | Jason Griffith | TEDxPSU

If you think of how book clubs are structured or the ways books are often taught in schools, reading frequently centers on a single text at a time. However, the problem with a one-book-at- a-time approach is that it doesn’t line up with the way many of us think, which involves making connections between lots of things we’ve read, watched, or listened to. In this talk, Dr. Griffith will share several ways texts can intersect and interact in purposeful reading. More importantly, Dr. Griffith will reflect on rethinking the way we read, including arranging and examining these kinds of textual networks, which is essential for expanding our perspectives and confronting our biases. Dr. Jason Griffith is an Assistant Professor of Literacies and English Language Arts in Penn State’s College of Education. Jason taught middle school and high school English for 12 years before earning a doctorate in English Education from Arizona State University. His research interests include writing pedagogy, adolescent literature, multimodal text intersections, particularly in narrative nonfiction and storytelling, and empowering literacy practices for middle and secondary students as well as preservice teachers.
