David Deutsch at KERRY SCHUSS Jim Joe and Eric Yahnker at THE HOLE

James Kalm traipses around Manhattan’s Lower East on a drizzly Sunday afternoon, keeping his eyes wide open for noteworthy signs of “cultural production”. Sliding up Orchard Street, he sights what appear to be brushy abstract paintings. But there’s a familiarity to this work. David Deutsch “Transfer Paintings” are the most recent presentation of this artist’s unusual technique. Scenes of suburban life rendered in slippery, exuberant strokes, these works are initially painted on large sheets of Plexiglas, then impressed onto paper which is subsequently laminated to canvas. Pedaling to the North West we stop in on the Bowery to check out a double show by Jim Joe (displaying aphoristic text on canvas pieces), along with an installation and large scale color pencil drawings by L.A. based artist Eric Yahnker at The Hole. This program was recorded April 1, 2016.
