Just a hundred years ago most people worked under terrible conditions. Heavy work, toiling around the clock, miserable wages. Even children had to work to make enough to survive. Young children. Very young children. None of that changed because of the ‘inevitability of progress’. Progress and technological advances did nothing to prevent child labour or low wages. The modern status of workers everywhere in the world has been achieved by a struggle for their rights. One important advantage in that struggle has been belonging to a trade union. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that your rights are guaranteed forever. Without trade unions, child labour and low wages will make a comeback. Is that the future you want for your children? No? Then join a trade union. So that the past doesn’t turn into the future.
