The Winyan Toka Win Garden

Fostering a sense of connectedness has always been the primary goal of the Winyan Toka Win Garden. Cheyenne River Youth Project's Food Sovereignty Teen Internship Program does that by reacquainting Lakota youth with the earth, sustainable agriculture, and traditional Native foods.

The program offers hands-on learning where interns plant seeds, weed, water, and harvest crops like cabbage, onions, and potatoes. The fresh, nutritious produce from the garden goes to the Cokata Winconi kitchen where the food is cooked, processed, and made available to the Lakota community.

Teens also learn Indigenous recipes and canning & food preservation techniques!
