Alan Pulverness "The Ghost at the Banquet:the use and abuse of literature in the language classroom"

The plenary talk given by Alan Pulverness, Assistant Academic Director, Norwich Institute for Language Education, at the E-merging Forum 4, Moscow, March 13-15, 2014. This talk examines the peculiar status of literary discourse and suggests methodological principles which favour the development of language awareness while maintaining respect for students as readers of literature.

March 13 -15, 2014 the British Council in Russia organised the E-merging Forum 4 that aimed to get together teachers of English to discuss and share challenges and best practice in the following content areas: Learning Technologies, Teaching English to Young Learners, ESP and EAP, Assessment, Literature and Culture. "E-merging Forum-4" was attended by more than 1200 attendees from all over Russia and Europe. During the E-merging Forum 4 there were plenary talks and discussions, practical workshops, discussion groups, open slots, online coverage and much more. The British Council invited such honoured speakers as Alan Pulverness, Catherine Kneafsey, Jamie Dunlea, Nicky Hockly, Tony Prince.
