Empowering students through storytelling | Robert Rubinstein | TEDxClaremontColleges

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We all tell stories – for stories are us. Learning to tell our stories well is a life skill. In this talk, Robert Rubinstein describes the storytelling curriculum he created as a teacher at Roosevelt Middle School in Eugene, Oregon, and the multiple educational and life skills hundreds of students attained through learning to tell tales.

Robert Rubinstein is a nationally recognized storyteller and educator from Eugene, Oregon. For 24 years, Robert directed Roosevelt Middle School’s nationally known Troupe of Tellers. These student troupes performed for some 70,000 Oregon students, for adult groups, and presented a performance-workshop at the 1993 National Storytelling Conference at the University of Washington in Seattle. Robert has performed at the New York Public Library, the Boston Public Library, the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle, schools in Atlanta, and presented workshops at the National Storytelling Conferences. Robert Rubinstein originated and directed Eugene's annual Multi-Cultural Storytelling Festival. During its twenty-year run, 57 storytellers from a wide variety of ethnic peoples visited over 130,000 students in the schools. Robert has also authored books and recordings.
