Why I Left RISD, Adjunct Professor Clara Lieu Explains

Clara Lieu announces her reasons for leaving her position as an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, after teaching there for 14 years. Institutional racism, unsustainable working conditions including lack of job security, benefits such as life insurance and more contribute to a systematic problem in high education which was been ongoing for many years. Prof Lieu explains her experiences at RISD as an adjunct professor and why despite world class resources and facilities, phenomenal students and more, weren't enough for her to stay in an environment that was hostile and toxic for POC.

Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.
