Not all DIY projects go as planned. A LOT WENT WRONG on this project. I'll show you WHAT REALLY HAPPENED while making this video replacing the window in my Class C RV door with a Thin Shade RV Window.

MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE
It’s a great feeling when a DIY project goes smoothly -- you know, when you can take a step back, admire your handiwork, nod and think “Look at what I’ve done”. Unfortunately, things don’t always go your way, but you can’t let it get you down.
This was one of those projects where things didn’t go well. When you add in the complexity of filming the whole thing the probability of smooth sailing goes down.
The morning of the project, I looked outside. It was cloudy. I looked around and it looked like it would stay cloudy...just cloudy. So I decided that it would be a good day to replace the window in my RV door with a Thin Shade RV window that I had recently purchased on Amazon. Of course, I was going to make a video documenting the whole thing. After all, that’s what I do.
I grabbed my stuff and headed out to get this done. After uncovering the RV part way, I got my camera setup and figured out what I was going to say.
It started to sprinkle a little. Oh great. Then it started to sprinkle harder. I pulled out the awning just before the rain started coming down harder. The situation was not optimal for filming, but I was determined not to quit.
Part way into the video, my neighbor nearby started using power tools...loud ones. So I waited that out. Each time there was a lull in the noise, I would quickly try and film something. And the airplanes...when did their flight path to/from Seattle get diverted over my house? Hmmm. When did that happen?
First Mistake: I needed to tape the frame and glass down while removing the old window and reinstalling the new. I opted to use blue masking tape so it could be easily removed...mistake! When installing the new window, the masking tape didn’t hold and the whole thing came crashing down. You’ll see this happen in the video.
Second Mistake: I installed one side of the frame upside down. Sure I read the instructions...OK more like scanned it. It didn’t appear to matter at a glance until you look close and notice that the ends are a little bit different.
Third Mistake: While reinstalling the upside-down frame, I dropped a couple of small black screws into the gravel. It was almost impossible to find them, but I found one. There were no extra screws in the kit so I had to improvise. Luckily I found a similar screw in my screw jar, but had to color it black making it less obvious that it didn’t belong.
All in all, it ends well. The new window is awesome, but what should have taken about ½ hour took about 3 hours to finish.
As I reviewed my video footage of the project, I realized that the real story that needed to be told was not about installing the window. The real story was behind the camera and how everything went wrong...almost horribly wrong.
