Delius: Summer Evening

Frederick Delius, 1862 -1934 :- From the 'Three Small Tone Poems' composed 1888-90 'Summer Evening' is played on this video. These tone poems have recently been brought together to complete the set, yet this hardly seems complete without Autumn! Unfortunately even though the Autumn tone poem is reputedly said to have been composed, it has yet to come to light! If only .....one can just imagine what a treasure that might be! The two other pieces include 'Spring Morning' and 'Winter Night' or as commonly known as 'Sleigh Ride'. Each fine examples of the composer's earlier work from his Leipzig period and his first encounter with Grieg.
Enjoy the images with the music, the first showing feature Grez-Sur -Loing, Delius' home in France which was much favoured by Impressionist painters like John Lavery of which the sequence initially shows, (from the area around the iconic bridge) on what appears to be a lovely Summer Evening. Other artists include Monet, and John Goodhall who captures joy and refinement in rural Edwardian England.
