How to DRESS a LIFE-SIZE SANTO? ASPh provides a step-by-step guide

Last December, ASPh together with Labor de Amor conducted a video tutorial on how to dress a tabletop santo. In this episode, ASPh performs another dressing tutorial, which focuses on a life-size santo. This episode aims to give a practical approach on maintaining a santo, preparing it for a procession and inspiring camareros to continue their annual tradition in the confines of their homes despite the Enhanced Community Quarantine. As such, dressing a santo is also form of prayer.

*The purpose of this episode is to provide an educational material on the subject of vesting religious images. Refrain from starting a debate whether the image in the video is Sta. Maria Jacobe or Sta. Maria Salome because it is beyond the scope of this vlog. In our parish, Sta. Maria Salome is the one holding the broom (walis ting-ting) and the censer (incensario) is assigned to Sta. Maria Jacobe.

In the canonical gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), nobody described in detail who was holding which. Even Bible scholars are still begging the question until today. In this case, many relied on tradition so much so that variations exist in many towns in the Philippines. In some provinces, Sta. Maria Salome is the one holding the broom while Sta. Maria Jacobe holds the censer like in the case of our town.

In provinces like Bulacan which was under the Augustinians, it could be observed that Sta. Maria Jacobe in many towns holds the broom except in Hagonoy and Baliwag where Sta. Maria Salome is the one possessing the broom. In Samal, Bataan, an usual depiction of Sta. Maria Salome could be found such that she is holding both the said accoutrements or symbols. Meanwhile, Franciscan administered towns would normally let Sta. Maria Salome hold the censer.

In the end, these issues are beyond our comprehension unless we ourselves were actual witnesses to the passion narrative. What we need to strive for is to emulate these holy women who possessed one common ground: they have absolute FAITH.
