What is ketosis?
Ketosis occurs when the body begins to burn fat as fuels because glucose is in short supply. Ketones are an alternative fuel source, made in the liver from the burning of fatty acids. The body can get into ketosis from an overnight fast usually lasting 12 hours or more, from longer fasts, and from certain diets like the common ketogenic diet. The brain can readily use ketones for fuel when glucose is unavailable.
