Behind the Scenes: 2018 West Regional, Day 1

📼 July 20th, 2018 | For the first time, the 2018 West Regional hosted athletes from the Canada West and West Coast regions, creating a very tight competition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, California.

On Day 1, 2017’s Games silver medalist Brent Fikowski heads into Event 1 with a plan to keep his reputation as the “endurance guy” intact, but perennial Games athlete Josh Bridges is hoping he’ll be able to let loose with his signature victory roar when the event is over.

Event 2 brings the barbell out for Linda—a descending triplet of deadlifts, bench presses and squat cleans. Canada West’s Emily Abbott dominates the event and closes out Day 1 with a first-place finish.

Abbott says she gets a “thrill” from throwing heavy weight around.

When producer Sevan Matossian questions Abbott about his perception of her relaxed training, Abbott is stumped.

“I think I feel a lot more at ease this year,” she responds. “I’m just loving life, man, and I’m really learning how to be totally present. So, maybe that comes off as more aloofness.”

At the close of the day, the top five doesn’t look like you’d expect, and athletes will head into Day ready to do anything for a trip to the Games.

For Abbott, high on the leaderboard after Day 1 and on her way to first overall, the competition will be all for naught. She’ll fail her drug test at the end of the competition and receive a four-year sanction.
