ProxMox and FreeNAS C-C-C-COMBO SERVER! With a bit of Chinese x79...

Is it possible to run a virtualized FreeNAS server inside a ProxMox VM, giving you the best of both worlds? Well, not only does it work, this build is insanely fast and quiet, making it quite possibly the perfect home server.

But first... what am I drinking???

Two beers for your viewing pleasure today, as this build spanned multiple days. First up is the Stone Enjoy By 01.01.20, a 9.6% Unfiltered IPA from their Enjoy By series of beers. If you like very up-front hop profile and a bit of 'dank'ness to your beers, this one will be right up your alley.

The night cap is a Fort George Waves of Silence Imperial Stout, clocking in at 9%. A very smooth, yet still quite boozy stout. Very approachable for dark beer novices, with a bit of a light roasty flavor and plenty of chocolate.

The commands you will need to assign your disks to FreeNAS are:
lsblk
ls -l /dev/disk/by-id
lshw -class disk -class storage

To assign a disk to a VM, enter the following command:

qm set ### -scsi$ /dev/disk/by-id/{DRIVE-ID}

Where ### is your VM ID (in my case, 100)
$ is the SCSI port you're using in the VM (SCSI0 is your boot disk, so anything 1-99 should work here, but each drive needs it's own unique port number)
And {DRIVE-ID} is the drive listing from /dev/disk/by-id/ of each disk.

NOTE: In the video, we wound up with HGST 4TB 12.0Gb Dual-Port SAS disks. The controller and cabling worked for us, but do make sure you purchase the correct hardware for your drives and controller setup.

Also note, if you want hardware passthrough (GPU, SAS controller, etc) to work in your setup, you need a motherboard that supports VT-d. This Chinese X79 motherboard does not. Software passthrough of hard drives works, but physical hardware assignment will not. Check your motherboard documentation to verify compatibility.
