Aretha Franklin on The Hollywood Palace | hosted by Sammy Davis, Jr. (1968) • Aretha @ 34:25
A 26 year old Aretha Franklin guest stars with 42 year old host Sammy Davis Jr. on The Hollywood Palace on November 2, 1968.
I wanted to share the full episode of this 50 year old in tribute of Ms. Frankin's transition. 1968 was Aretha's breakout year. Although she had been performing since her early teens, it was her move over to Atlantic records and the release of 1967's I Never Loved A Man LP (which included 4 number one singles, that Aretha Franklin was anointed "The Queen Of Soul"
This episode aired a few moths after the release of her 4th Atlantic LP, Aretha Now and two moths before the Soul '69 LP (all hit number one on the R&B charts).
Patterned after The Ed Sullivan Show, Hollywood Palace was a unique as a showcase for Black performers. ABC was a fledgling new network at the time and did well with shows geared to youth and black performers. Unlike Sullivan's show,, where it was considered an honor to interact with Ed Sullivan for a few winded seconds after performing, the series was built around a series of rotating hosts. Established legends like Sammy Davis Junior often utilized the opportunity to create magical moments of TV history. ABC also was the home of Shindig, Music Scene and inked a deal with Berry Gordy which would see his top acts star in a series of one hour specials, and Diana Ross guest host a Hollywood Palace that gave The Jackson Five their first national TV exposure (a month before Sullivan).
I DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS. Originally shared on the Hollywood Palace Youtube channel. They do an awesome job. I urge you to check them out at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4eRidJWTPHhfomeSEaxUjw
