Siblings Enter Foster Care... And Get Separated: How Does It Feel? What Happens Next?

Siblings are often separated when they enter foster care. Why? There are not enough foster families, especially families willing to take sibling groups. It is not uncommon for siblings to be placed in different communities and counties.

It can be hard for siblings to maintain connections during this time.

When the case management team believes that more sibling contact is needed, Sib-Link® can help! Monthly visits are arranged by our team, with the focus of making memories and building lifelong bonds. Visits consist of trips to local museums, zoos, parks, fun parks, and restaurants, with special attention given to family traditions, holidays, and birthdays.

As siblings visit month after month, their bond grows deeper. They begin to expect this time together, and overall anxiety lessens. We usually hear things like, "This was so much fun. I can't wait until next month!"

Lifelong bonds develop through this program, where adoptive parents continue to bring children to visit with siblings still in foster care and siblings who are adopted together.
