Non-Communicable diseases cause two-thrids of all deaths in the world today, and the major causes for them are four: Tobacco use, Unhealthy diet, insufficient physical activity and harmful use of alcohol.
This lecture chiefly addresses the diet part. Credible scientific information on the issue of optimum diet and exercise are often not available to the public.
Another hurdle is the general disregard for science and method of science, typical of "a society that embraces modern science and technology while rejecting the ethos and ethics of enlightenment".
In the absence of proper scientific understanding, umpteen number of pseudo-scientific ideas and superstitions about food and exercises flourish.
Some of the popular misconceptions discussed in this presentation are (1) Non-vegetarian diet causes life-style diseases. (2) Cooking of food is 'unnatural' and harmful (3) White sugar alone is harmful whereas
unrefined sugar and honey are 'natural' and healthy. (4) 'Yoga therapy' is an effective treatment for Diabetes.
