Fear is your best friend | John Cantor | TEDxNoosa

Adventurer John Cantor talks about what he has learnt about fear and anxiety over the course of his professional adventuring.

In January 2014 John took on his next goal: a winter traverse of the Brooks Range, which had never been done and was seemingly impossible. After months of flawless preparation, John and fellow adventurer Evan Howard began the trip but made the tough decision to stop on the 10th day due to frostbite.

John’s goal has been to find his own limit, and in the continuous darkness, in temperatures below minus 45 degrees and with the constant threat of falling through ice on the rivers, he found it. These experiences have only made him stronger and led him to inspire companies, sports teams and schools with stories of his adventures and the lessons he has learned from them.

Very few people experience failure on as grand a scale as John Cantor has, and return for more – time and time again.

In 2012, adventurer John Cantor set out to achieve a six-year dream of traversing the Brooks Range solo – a 1600-kilometre trek across Arctic Alaska, considered one of the toughest solo expeditions on earth and completed just four times prior. Almost completely devoid of human presence, this environment is full of grizzly bears, wolves and more.

Not only did John achieve his goal, but he also smashed the previous speed record by 10 days, completing the expedition in 31 days. John's expedition was featured on the ABC's Australian Story and was the most downloaded episode for 2012.
