If you want to be taken seriously, learn to speak the “language” the other person understands.

If you’re a creative service company, and speaking to a business owner, speak the language of business and not just of design. You must become bilingual.

I see the opposite happening. Creatives use the language of design, marketing, SEO, development, UX, or branding. They get frustrated when clients don’t speak in terms they understand.

So when you go to speak about budget, it’s a disconnect for your client. How did we get here? It’s jarring and abrupt.

Ask them, what business problem are you trying to solve? How will you measure success?

Use their language not yours.
