How To: Rescue Breathing/Ventilation
Providing rescue breaths is a critical skill that can save lives in the event a patient becomes apneic (stops breathing). Most of the time a patient that is apneic will also be in cardiac arrest and two rescue breaths will be given after every thirty compressions during CPR; however, occasionally a patient will become apneic and still have a pulse in which case one rescue breath should be given every six seconds. Each breath should be given over approximately one second and should be just enough to see the chest rise gently.
