GOMER - The Hebrew name Gomer refers to the Cimmerians, who dwelt in what is now Crimea in Ukraine, "beyond the Caucusus", and attacked Assyria in the late 7th century BC. The Assyrians called them Gimmerai; the Cimmerian king Teushpa was defeated by Assarhadon of Assyria sometime between 681 and 668 BC. Josephus placed Gomer and the "Gomerites" in Anatolian Galatia: "For Gomer founded those whom the Greeks now call Galatians, but were then called Gomerites." Galatia in fact takes its name from the ancient Gauls (Celts) who settled there. However, the later Christian writer Hippolytus of Rome in c. 234 assigned Gomer as the ancestor of the Cappadocians, neighbours of the Galatians. Jerome (c. 390) and Isidore of Seville (c. 600) followed Josephus' identification of Gomer with the Galatians, Gauls and Celts. According to tractate Yoma, in the Talmud, Gomer is identified as "Germamya".

MAGOG - While the origin of the term is unclear, it may have referred to Lydia, in what is now Turkey. Its use in the Book of Ezekiel, Chapter 38 has led to it being associated with apocalyptic traditions. Various ancient and medieval traditions have built on the biblical references and added details to it.
The origin of the name Magog is unclear. It may come from the Akkadian mat Gugi, "land of Gog", that is, the land of Gyges: Lydia (today's West Turkey, former Byzantine / Roman empire)

MADAI - Biblical scholars have generally identified Madai with the Iranian Medes of much later records. The Medes, reckoned to be his offspring by Josephus and most subsequent writers, were also known as Madai, including in both Assyrian and Hebrew sources. In addition, the Kurds still maintain traditions of descent from Madai.

JAVAN - Josephus states the traditional belief that this individual was the ancestor of the Greeks.
