3 Exercises to Stop Jaw Popping and Pain
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is more common than you think. Even if you don't have pain, your jaw may pop or click when you chew or even move your jaw in certain ways. It can be very annoying. The reason you have this pain is because there is a neuromuscular imbalance in your muscle activation. These 3 exercises are geared towards retraining those muscles in your jaw to activate symmetrically and with proper timing.
With the first exercise, keep in mind not to overdo it. This area is very sensitive and overdoing the exercise may lead to headaches and even more soreness. But, if done an appropriate amount, it can really help to loosen up the jaw joint itself and allow it to track not only inferiorly but also anteriorly.
With the soft tissue massage, you will know you are on a tight muscle because it will be tender. Your goal is to make the muscle soft and springy and no longer tender. But again, do not overdo it.
Finally, with the final exercise, like I talk about in the video, GO SLOW. You should be able to control your motion so that it tracks straight and the motion is smooth, not jerky. If you cannot track straight and go smoothly, do it without resistance first then slowly add resistance as your movement improves.
Obviously, these exercises are not for everyone, so make sure to consult your local physical therapist before proceeding. Also, these exercises are only a small portion of TMJ disorder recovery. If you have questions, please comment below or email us at hello@rehabandrevive.com
