How much rifle scope can $60 get you? Simmons ProTarget Rimfire 4x32mm

Sometimes you just want a simple scope for your simple squirrel gun. The Simmons ProTarget Rimfire 4x32mm has a formula I like for a quick and handy 22LR rifle, but it's only $60. Is it any good?

The Simmons ProTarget Rimfire brings a ridiculously high quality level to a budget scope. The glass quality mirrors that of the excellent Bushnell Prime 1-4x32mm, with shockingly good color, contrast, brightness, and field of view. The high resolution in the center of the image does give way toward the edges, but overall it's still a superior image for such an inexpensive scope. The Simmons ProTarget Rimfire lineup includes a couple of variable zoom models: a 2-7x32mm and a classic 3-9x40mm. I chose this fixed-power model partly for its low weight and simplicity, and also because a fixed-power scope tends to produce a better image than a variable.

The TruPlex reticle is a two-step crosshair; pretty simple by modern standards. The party piece of the ProTarget is its replaceable elevation turret caps that include drop values for 22LR and 17 HMR. The clicks are precise if quiet.

I recommend this scope for your flexible hunting rig or your child's first rifle scope. It would pair nicely with anything from air rifles up to this excellent Savage A22 Pro Varmint rifle I'm testing now.
