Songs for Hope: Ashanti Branch and Alysha Lee
On September 18th, 2023 Surgeon General Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy recognized the heroic work to support mental health and well-being during the last years of the pandemic. In a ceremony presented in the Concert Hall, he awarded the Surgeon General’s Medallion—the highest honor he can present to a civilian—to individuals or organizations who exemplify unusual acts of compassion, innovative mental health efforts, and exceptional leadership in advancing the well-being of their communities.
In this video we hear the stories of two of the recipients: Ashanti Branch and Alysha Lee.
Ashanti Branch is a master in building healthy relationships in schools, a pioneer in education reform, and in youth mental health, with over 18 years of experience. He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club (EFC), a non-profit organization dedicated to seeing marginalized students graduate high school by providing them with emotional tools and mental health support.
Born in San Francisco, Alysha Lee stands as a leader and activist with determination and optimism. Currently a senior in high school, Lee’s journey has been defined by her unwavering commitment to uplifting those around her and making a positive impact on her community.
