Refugee Voices from Egypt - Raghad's Dream

Refugees from the ongoing war in Syria face constant hardship and struggle as they attempt to build a new life abroad.

Raghad, a Syrian refugee in Cairo, has experienced her share of pain and suffering. Raghad had been married for 40 days when her husband was killed by a missile strike while out walking in the streets in Damascus. Deciding they could no longer stay in Syria, her family sought refuge in Egypt. Over time, her father Ayman struggled to make ends meet. Unable to support his family, he made the perilous decision to attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Egypt to Europe with the help of smugglers. Caught and detained by the Egyptian Coast Guard, Raghad’s family remain in Egypt. A talented artist, Raghad’s drawings are both therapeutic and ambitious – she hopes one day to become a successful fashion designer.
“A person draws either reality or fiction. I draw things I miss, things I’ve lost, and things I need.”
Raghad, a young Syrian refugee living in Egypt.
