ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
These are the real Speed Stars of Haruna. Ofcourse, they don’t go by such a contrived name, but to me - that’s who they are.

Because they are the last few keeping the legend alive, still drifting on the touge of Haruna-san, which we all know Mt. Akina from Initial D

Drifting is disappearing in Gunma. I know this because over the past 7 years, I have seen less and less young people out on the touge. It used to be a whole row of 30 to 40 cars here, now it’s just a handful. buying the cars which are getting older and older.

When I first came to Japan, you could buy an S14 for 3k, an R33 GTR for 6k, an FD RX-7 for 4K. Now, all of those cost 3-4x more for twice the mileage and damage.

And most young guys know aren’t even that interested in sports cars. They prefer eco-cars, kei-cars, luxury cars, or new cars/crossovers like the CX-9.

That’s why I think it’s so important to document the scene while it’s still around. Because this might be the last few generations of Japanese touge hashiriya.

I’m really proud of this episode, it might be some of the best 15 minutes I’ve put together yet.

What I’m happy about is the fact that I showed what these guys are really like. While the media is quick to demonize street racers as being a public menace, to me They aren’t scary or crazy or dangerous - they are just young kids who dare to live outside of the strict norms of Japanese society. They dare to be different, and to carry on the history of their subculture. And they are really incredibly talented too. This culture is so interesting, and I hope that I was able to convey the happy, chill vibe that I felt hanging out with the speed stars of Haruna.

Huge shout out to my friend Andrew burns (instagram:lonelykorea) for providing the ending track “Excited”. It was really just the perfect track for the video.

Let me know what you guys thought of the video:) as always, awaiting those bananas in the comments, but please write something else as I make sure to read every single one of your comments.
