How Does MDMA (Ecstasy) Work?

MDMA or Ecstasy is an empathogen, meaning that it makes you feel empathetic, friendly and euphoric. It does this by acting on the neurotransmitters in your brain like noradrenaline, serotonin and dopamine.

MDMA (Ecstasy) has 3 main effects.
1: It promotes the release of neurotransmitters in the brain
2: It inhibits the reuptake of those neurotransmitters
3: It mimics the effects of those neurotransmitters

As a result, the brain is flooded with noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin, leading to feelings of intense pleasure, happiness and euphoria.

Some of the side effects of MDMA (Ecstasy) include insomnia, teeth grinding and becoming too friendly.

MDMA (Ecstasy) is generally not very addictive because your brain builds up a tolerance to the drug, reducing the positive effects while enhancing the negative effects.

Pure MDMA is relatively safe in small amounts, however it is easy for this drug to be diluted or replaced with other powders like cocaine, ketamine, paracetamol or even bath salts, which are very dangerous to consume.

Another big risk with using MDMA (Ecstasy) is Hyperthermia and Dehydration. This drug causes your body to heat up and if you forget to drink water and dance too much, you will overheat and pass out. Remember to stay hydrated and keep cool.

Finally, if somebody you know has too much MDMA, keep their temperature down and give them something to rehydrate with. If they are very sick, get them to a hospital where a doctor can treat them and keep them safe.
