Tip #1: Share your work online 1:37
Once I started sharing my work online, people started noticing & would ask for custom designs and commissions. It was scary at first but the first step in becoming a professional artist is to create a portfolio and share it!

Tip #2: Have a side income 2:39
I definitely did not launch into full time artist from the get-go. I had a lot of side jobs that allowed me to continue my freelance journey as well as make contacts that would later help me in moving to full time artist.

Tip #3: Set Deadlines 3:19
Time management is SO important as a freelance artist. Make sure to create a schedule that will ensure you will get things done on time - including mini drafts leading up to the final design.

Tip #4: Add buffer time into your schedule 3:34
Things happen that are out of our control and it is so important to create buffer time. Add buffer time into your schedule so you can meet deadlines even if something unexpected happens.

#5: Have a contract in place 4:00
Something I didn’t learn in school was setting ground rules for your freelance projects. Make sure to include concrete information like number of revisions so clients know what to expect!

#6: Set office hours & stick to them 4:55
Let your clients know how and when they can communicate with you. As a freelancer, it is easy to work whenever and not have a set schedule, but if you want your clients to only reach out to you during your business hours, make sure you are abiding by those as well!

#7: Keep written receipts 5:34
Having written receipts is like insurance for your verbal agreements. This will help make your clients feel safe and avoid any confusion throughout the process. It also makes it easier to keep track of different projects as your clientele begins to grow!

#8: Network with other creatives 6:28
Networking has helped me tremendously in building my art career! I kept in touch with fellow students from my school as well as creatives that I had worked with in the past.

#9: Create an online community 7:38
If you are not surrounded by creatives, create your own community online! You can connect with people all over the world through different social media platforms - you never know what can happen!

#10: Create these habits now 7:58
In order to become a professional artist, it’s best to adapt these habits now. This will set you up for success when you do move to full time!
