About the Book
The need and desire to communicate probably created the need to express one’s thoughts and feelings to the other, even if language were a barrier. The Tower of Babel as a metaphor indicates the absence of the ability to translate at a given period in human history. Though the dictionary offers many meanings of ‘translation’ for purposes of this volume, the word is used in the limited sense of rendering words and ideas from one language to another. In the Indian context, translation is important because owing to translation, people of different cultural backgrounds can understand each other and come together. Translation is a continuous process as each age translates the same text in a given context of the needs and demands of the period. Translation touches upon political and cultural dimensions that concern not only the translations of languages but of cultural contexts between different countries, cultures, and political systems. Since the question of translation has become a politically and culturally crucial question, one can argue that translation can be regarded as a central metaphor for some of the most pressing tasks confronting us at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Translation points at how different languages, different cultures, different political contexts, can be put together in such a way as to provide for mutual intelligibility but without having at the same time to sacrifice difference in the interest of a blind assimilation. Translation, in this sense, is about the creation of new cultural and political maps, the establishment of shared territories and of points of articulation, the development of a border reason, as opposed to the simple acceptance of the reason of the borders.
The Volume combines theoretical approaches to translation and practical application of these by actual translations by our contributors. In addition, each translator describes the process of translation and the problems faced in this process. Of course, they also share the joys.
We hope this will provide a good source for both students and teachers of translation and translation studies.
About the Authors
Dr. Indira Nityanandam is a gold medalist in M.A. Osmania University, Hyderabad and retired as Principal, Smt. S.R. Mehta Arts College, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. She has been teaching for over four decades. Being a versatile and prolific scholar, she has published six books and more than 30 research papers on translation studies, ELT and women’s writing. She is the Associate Editor of GNOSIS: An International Journal of English Language and Literature. Her areas of interest include Translation Studies, Indian Writing in English, Modern British Fiction and ELT.
Dr. Saikat Banerjee is Senior Lecturer in English, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, St. Theresa International College, Bangkok, Thailand. He is the Editor-in-chief of two International Journals, GNOSIS: An International Journal of English Language & Literature and DAATH VOYAGE. He has participated and presented papers in many National and International Seminars and Conferences and is actively engaged in research work. He has published several research papers in journals of world repute. His areas of interest include Translation Studies, Indian Literature, Post-colonial Literature, Gender studies and British, American & Indian Short story writings. He has to his credit 5 books published from publishers of International Repute.
