The Tonal is one of the latest tech heavy home gyms on the market. Tonal provides a digital resistance of up to 200 pounds through magnetic force.

As a coach and strength athlete, I was curious if this machine could truly provide me with an adequate and intense workout. Here's what I can tell you, the machine itself provides good, instructed workouts, but it's not going to be for everyone.

Below, I've provided my thoughts on some of Tonal's pros, cons, and who the machine is best for.

PERFORMANCE PROS

1. Spotter, Chains, and Eccentric Features

As a serious fitness enthusiast, I liked the spotter, chains, and eccentric features. The spotter feature decreases the load when it feels you begin to struggle, while the eccentric and chains features increase the intensity for certain exercises.

Personally, I maxed out the machine quickly on compound movements, so adding a little extra intensity with these features is a nice way to increase my work load intensity.

2. Progressive Workouts

As opposed to simply providing one-off workouts, you can select programs to follow based on your goals. Personally, I like this attribute for the fitness enthusiast who wants to track their progress. It's more intuitive than simply winging workouts here and there.

You can also perform single workouts or make your own by performing individual movements.

3. Multiple Variables Tracked

For every workout, Tonal tracks a ton of variables including: Time under tension, reps, sets, load, volume, and range of motion.

If you love tracking your work, then you'll be happy to know Tonal provides a pretty good spread of data for every workout.

4. Initial Strength Assessment

One thing I like about Tonal is that it makes you go through an initial strength assessment. This helps Tonal's device adapt weights to your projected strength levels. For a true beginner, I thought this was super useful.

Let's not beat around the bush here, but the Tonal is incredibly expensive for the normal fitness enthusiast. Below, we've provided a run down of what you can expect to pay when purchasing a Tonal home gym.

With a cumulative price tag of over $3,700.00 USD, the Tonal is NOT cheap.

2. Limited Weight

If you're a serious lifter or athlete, then you'll probably feel limited by the 200 lbs of resistance (100 lbs per arm). For unilateral movements and smaller movements it's more than enough, but for compound exercises, 200 lbs isn't truly enough for many.

WHO IS TONAL FOR?

In my opinion, Tonal is for the fitness enthusiast that wants an all-in-one home gym that looks clean and takes up minimal space.

If you're an apartment dweller, low maintenance fitness enthusiast, or someone who just loves fitness tech, then I think Tonal is good fit for you.

If you're someone that loves the gym and wants to save money, then I think Tonal's $3,700.00 USD price tag will be a turn off.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Look, I'm an athlete that loves the gym, but I see the context in which Tonal can be useful. At the end of the day, I would use it as a tool to progress and not an end all be all device.

Is it going to be for everyone?

No, but I do think Tonal provides an adequate service for the serious fitness enthusiast who wants to work out at home with the latest tech.
