Anna's Hummingbirds At The Feeder

Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) is usually the first hummingbird that arrives at our feeders in Northern California. As a matter of fact, some of them stay here year round. Female Anna's Hummingbirds show up in greater numbers in December and January when they arrive to begin their nesting activity. The females associate with males only long enough to copulate. They construct the nest, incubate the eggs, and care for nestlings, typically in winter and early spring, timed according to the availability of nectar and small insects for food.

This video shows a male at the feeder followed by the female Anna's Hummingbird perched in a nearby tree. Following is the activity common at hummingbird feeders which include nesting females and some of their offspring as well as males all vying for a spot at the feeder to suck up the sugar water.
