Robocon 2019 Walking Robot Concept - Autonomous Horse robot with 4 Legs

'RAPID' Robot platform is concept robot for autonomous 4 leg horse robot for Robocon 2019.

In past few months we in Robokits received lots of queries for this kind of robot which can be used for the task. Many teams also bought the parts but were unable to make the robot properly walking, so we decided to present a concept for doing the same.

This is a very light weight robot of only 3.5Kg including battery, body, motors and electronics. We used laser cut sheets for making the robot, the properly designed chassis and legs make the robot very rigid and stable. Eight Quater scale servo motors with 60 Kg.Cm torque (RKI-1229) provides all power required to make the robot walking. Also its capable of carrying load of another 500 grams and walk at same speed. Robot is powered through a 7.4V 2S 5200 mAh Lipo battery which allows robot to walk for 30 to 45 minutes.

More than hardware this robot depends on software to walk properly. We used our Arduino based 18 Servo controller board to make this robot move perfectly. The controller comes with a GUI software which allows to move servos with sliders and make sequences very easily. Without any kind of coding walking, turning, leaning and obstacle avoiding sequences can be generated very easily. There are advanced functions like setting of offsets, limits and direction for each servo, so moves programmed for one leg can be easily used for other legs also. Also motor speeds for each steps can be set so movements can be fast and slow as per requirement. Once the sequences are generated they can be transferred to Arduino IDE in form of code with functions for each action. All these functions can be called in main loop with feedback from other sensors for line sensing, obstacle sensing and orientation sensing making the robot full or semi autonomous.
