The El Morocco Collection // Mecum Kissimmee 2021 // Full Feature

The 1956-57 Chevrolet El Morocco was one of those “better in theory” sort of concepts, but the custom creations to come from the innovative project are revered today. The idea was to take the relatively affordable Chevrolet and turn it into something resembling the day’s desirable and luxurious Cadillac Eldorado convertible in an effort to appeal to those with bigger dreams than pocketbooks.

Priced at $7,750, the Eldorado was on par with the cost of a modest single-family home, while Chevrolet’s base model was priced at just over $2,000, leaving what the El Morocco project’s visionary ringleader Reuben Allender hoped would be just enough wiggle room in the equation to allow him to add some bells and whistles to the Chevy without entirely closing the value gap. While his creations proved absolutely beautiful and today stand as coveted collectibles due to their good looks, rarity and unique backstory, the cars in period went underappreciated.

Too pricey for the Chevrolet buyers and close enough in cost to the Cadillac to convince those customers to shell out for the real deal, Allender’s El Moroccos were left middling in a price range suited to very few.

With the 2021 iteration of the world’s largest collector car auction now set to present not one but a total of three of these luxurious yet quirky creations as part of the 3,500-vehicle lineup, it’ll be a prime opportunity for bidders to find an ultra-rare Caddy-inspired custom to call their own.
