I’m standing here next to something rather unique, the Mike Tyson of muscle cars, a remake of a classic car, and I know John and Horace Dodge would be proud!
This is a 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT HellCat finished in Pitch Black paint with black interior. The engine is a 6.2L HEMI V8 with a Supercharger making 707 horsepower and 650 ft.lb of torque and all that power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. This car was born out of a financial crisis and in secrecy. This hellcat is part of a line of cars designed to compete with the Porsche 911, now hear me out, I will tell you why in just a bit… Today, I borrowed this car from a friend to show you why I think this is an awesome car that you need to buy RIGHT NOW. After that, I will show you some of my favorite features, take it for a drive, and lastly but not least, I will point out some of the things you should look for if you’re planning on buying one. Stick around, you never know, you might learn a thing or two, or even better, you might have valuable feedback to share with all of us so make sure to comment below!
Dodge the company was started by two passionate brothers John and Horace Dodge, and when I say passionate, I mean passionate in every sense! They were both very reserved, but wouldn’t hesitate to beat you unconscious if you messed with them... This same passion was later translated into their cars. The brothers started as machinists working at their father’s Marine Steam Engine shop and other machine shops along the way. Eventually they started their own machine shop and began supplying parts for other manufacturers. Fast forward a couple of years and the brother had become one of the largest automotive suppliers in Detroit! They had a 24-acre, 5000 employee plant, capable of building a quarter-million complete cars a year. All of them for Ford. After the relationship with Ford went sour, they decided to make their own cars. The first Dodge was completed in November 1914. Following the brothers death in 1920, the company was sold by their families to Dillon, Read & Co. in 1925 before being sold to Chrysler in 1928. Chrysler got to work on the brand and the first Challenger was born.
The original Challenger was introduced in 1969 as a 1970 model. The car is a descendant of the Dodge Silver Challenger and was built on the Chrysler E platform while taking components and styling cues from the Plymouth Barracuda. This first generation Challenger was built until 1974. The second generation Challenger is one that most of you have probably NEVER heard of… and you’re not gonna believe this, but it was a REBADGED Mitsubishi… that’s right, during the oil crisis of the 70s, Dodge decided to partner with Mitsubishi and rebadge the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda coupé, and sold it under the name “Dodge Colt Challenger.”
Now fast forward a few decades… The year is 2008, and the US had experienced the worst financial crisis since the great depression, people were losing jobs, banks weren’t lending money, car manufactures were in deep trouble. The “Big Three” General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford almost died. The entire American automotive industry almost disappeared forever. Dodge in particular suspended production of their cars in December 2008. But thanks to the $80 billion dollar lifeline provided by TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) engineered by the Bush and Obama Administrations, the U.S. auto industry has recovered. Dodge received 4 billion dollars from the federal government to restart production, but that wasn’t enough. They decided to marry Fiat Automobiles S.p.A., of Italy in June 2009. As soon as the ink was dry, FIAT’s CEO, Sergio Marchionne, started making changes. First he changed the company’s name to Fiat-Chrysler-Automobiles (FCA) and started rebranding. With Dodge in particular, he started by splitting their viper and ram lines into their own brand and focusing their efforts on performance models like this one.
Dodge knew that to revive the brand they needed to come out strong and on top of the big three. They decided to bring the Charger and Challenger models back! Shortly after their introduction in 2006, (yes that weird looking guy sticking his head out of the window like a dog is me at New York International Auto Show in 2006), Dodge engineers started playing with the SRT8 and other variants, but they knew that wasn’t enough…
They set out to make a car that can produce 600hp reliably and beat the competition. Shortly after the Dodge engineers began the project, they found out that Ford was working on the Shelby GT500 which was set to have over 600HP. Back to the drawing board they went. And after a lot of drawing, they were able to produce the unthinkable, the unheard of, a production V8 Making over 700 horsepower!
