The gallbladder is a pear-shaped sac whose primary function is storing the bile that was synthesized in the liver. The gallbladder consists of several anatomical parts (fundus, neck, body) and lies in a fossa between the right and left lobes of the liver. It functions as an accessory organ by concentrating the bile and transporting it to the duodenum via the common bile duct, aiding in digestion and fat absorption.
The gallbladder receives its blood supply from the cystic artery, stemming from the right hepatic artery and receives venous drainage by the cystic veins that lead partially into the portal vein or back to the liver.
In this tutorial we will go over all of the relevant aspects of this organ, its anatomy facts and functions.
- 0:24 topography of the gallbladder
- 1:00 function as accessory organ of the foregot
- 1:19 division into 3 anatomical parts (fundus, neck, body)
- 2:37 ducts of the gallbladder
- 3:20 arterial and venous blood supply
- 3:49 lymphatic drainage and innervation
