Saving others' lives, taking one's own | Dr. Debasish Basu | TEDxAIIMSPatna

Why do brilliant minds, one of the best and brightest all around, intent on helping others, saving their lives, even creating new ones – end up taking their own? What’s going wrong here? And what can be done about it?
India has witnessed a disturbing spate of suicides by doctors over the years. Dr. Basu delves into the life of a life-saver in the second most populous country in the world, explores the causes behind these fatal outcomes and demystifies the complex web of work-stress-personal life- expectations-criticism that drives these brilliant minds to Death. He suggests that Suicides be destigmatized and our entire system- both healthcare and social be restructured to prevent the loss of these precious lives. Dr. Basu is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Social Psychiatry since 2011 November onwards. He is also the Founding Editor of World Social Psychiatry, the official journal of the World Association of Social Psychiatry. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
