Me First | Sumeet Kadian | TEDxUConnSalon

In a society where those who selflessly care for others are consistently praised—such as healthcare workers saving hundreds of lives—it is easy to forget the fundamental need of caring for oneself. Therefore, society should also praise those who can successfully meet their own basic and psychological needs because doing so not only promotes mental health and wellbeing but also the ability to successfully look after others. The courage to persist—to keep going and succeed in the face of adversity—is most prominent in those who have taken the necessary steps to take care of themselves first. My name is Sumeet Kadian and I am a rising junior majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology and minoring in Healthcare Management and Insurance Studies. I am also pursuing an individualized major in Healthcare and Society. My interest in medicine started when I was in middle school, and since then, I have always been eager to learn more about the field. However, my various experiences volunteering in a local hospital, serving as an EMT, and shadowing healthcare workers has shown me that medicine is far from perfect, with problems ranging from ensuring equitable healthcare access to the mental health of healthcare workers. On campus, I conduct research in a neurobiology lab, serve as vice president for Medical Minds Matter, am involved in a task force on modifying the general education curriculum, and work with Community Outreach as a trip director for the Alternative Breaks Program. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
