As Apollo 8 circled the Moon, humans saw our planet Earth “rise” over another celestial object for the very first time. Astronaut Bill Anders was looking for future landing sites when he photographed the picture that would come to be known as the iconic “Earthrise” image. Many consider “Earthrise,” to be one of the most important photos of the 20th century and credit the image with helping inspire the environmental movement.
